5 Things You Need To Know When Ordering Plastic Cards Online

Plastic Cards

You need to know the basics before you can start ordering plastic cards online for your business. These are mainly choices that depend on your budget, POS setup, and other requirements. Right from card thickness to the type of magnetic stripe, you need to specify your choices before ordering the cards. Without further ado, here are 5 things you need to know before ordering cards online.

Card Thickness

Plastic gift cards are available in different thicknesses. For reference, a credit card is 30 millimeters thick. A 30 mil thickness is a great choice for premium gift cards or membership cards. 20 mil thickness is ideal for premium plastic business cards.

Type of Magnetic Strips

If you didn’t know it already, a magnetic stripe is the black bar located behind your credit or debit card. These stripes can store data such customer information. Working in tandem with a specialized POS reader, a loyalty or gift card with a magnetic stripe can help you store and update customer purchase activity. If you want a card with magnetic stripe you have to choose between Hi-Co (High Coercivity) and Lo-Co (Low Coercivity).  Hi-Co Cards have a stronger magnetic field and thus are much more durable. Credit cards and bank cards have Hi-Co magnetic stripes because they are swiped frequently and they need to last a long time. Generally, a Hi-Co magnetic stripe is black in color. The less expensive, Lo-Co magnetic stripe is for cards that see much less action. Lo-Co cards are ideally suited for store gift cards, membership cards, and library cards.

Card Material

As far as card material goes, you have two main choices, PVC or composite plastic. Short for polyvinyl chloride, PVC is a 100% plastic material and is often the material of choice for making credit cards. More expensive than composite plastic, PVC is a great choice if you want your privilege or gift card to look and feel like a standard credit card. Composite plastic is made by joining layers of plastic sheet over a synthetic Teslin core. Composite plastic cards are durable and they are good at resisting scratches. Being cheaper than PVC, composite plastic is a great material choice if you are ordering in bulk quantities and want to save money.

Designing Service

Reputed plastic card printing firms such as Plascards usually offer designing services. This is a great option if you have limited graphic design skills and don’t want to hire an independent professional. The design team takes the time to understand your requirements and for an extra charge, they create a custom design. Opting for the designing service is also a good choice if you don’t want to get into the hassle of collaborating between the plastic card printing firm and a graphic designer.

Shipping

If a plastic card printing firm is charging you additional shipping fee then you should probably look elsewhere. This is because most custom plastic card sellers offer free shipping within the United States. Apart from offering you free shipping, Plascards allows you to select the turn-around time when you place the order.
